Period Party | Real Talk

*This post contains sponsored content*

Hey guys,

So today we are going to talk a fairly taboo subject. I know you don’t want to but unfortunately it’s time we had a chat.

First I want to talk about the reason this topic has come up. Recently I was contacted by MyLadyBug. MyLadyBug is a subscription service which caters to your needs at the worst part of the month. Yeah we all know it’s the worst. Basically when you sign up for your subscription you choose what products you want to receive ie tampons or pads. You also get to choose what absorbency you want, so you can get some for the light days and some for heavy days. That’s not all you get though, you even get some chocolate and nice herbal teas to help you through the worst of it all. Best part of it all? It comes in an envelope with no discernible markings on it that fits through the letterbox. No one even needs to know what your getting. At the (almost) ripe old age of 23 I find that I still get very anxious when it comes to buying these kinds of things so it’s nice to have them appear at the house right when I need them (and with the bit of variety I need in the packs).

These are the very discreetly packaged pads

I have to say I have always had a pretty hard time dealing with my period. From the start it was never going to be good. Once at a doctor’s appointment my mum revealed to me that when I was a very young child I exhibited the symptoms of having a period, it was legit thought I was getting my period that young. Like I said… it was never gonna be an easy ride. I remember once I hit about 13/14 I was on edge about it. There nerves were killing me. More for the mortification of looking like a murder scene in public (yes that is how my mind worked).  When I was first shipped off to the Gaeltacht I went with a GIANT pack of pads in hand. Needless to say it did not happen while I was there. I can’t actually remember my first period. I am taking that as a good sign. It wasn’t embarrassing. I do vaguely remember just feeling a bit like “oh here we go, no more getting away with not having a period”. Because when I was young I was dying not to get one. I mean, who wants to have that, but to the socially anxious it is a bloody nightmare. As it turns out I didn’t have to deal with it yet, because it was at least a year until period number two and after that they were very sporadic. I would definitely say I was 16 if not a bit older before I started seeing them more regularly than every few months… an almost regular rhythm some might say.

It was around this time I got crippling migraines. I was in 5th year so about 16. They were so bad that I would often miss school or have to be sent home sick. It took a very long time to figure out what was actually wrong with me. I was in college, I want to say second year of college, when the doctor told me I had “stage 4 neurotic migraines”. I don’t know if that is even a thing, basically I had an Estrogen intolerance which caused the migraines. Do you know how flipping inconvenient that is as a girl? I mean never mind that it’s like the female hormone but I was on the pill to sort my skin out which was full of Estrogen. Things had to change and I was put on a Progesterone only pill. For the first time in a long time I had no migraines, I also had no period though. It was one of the side effects of this new pill I was on and just happened to affect me. That didn’t really bother me bar the fact I was in a relationship at the time and getting a period every month is a nice little reassurance. I also had horrific mood swings although I’m beginning to think that might just be me and no effect of the pill.

When I broke up with that boyfriend I actually came off the pill. I got no migraines thank God. It took a long time for my period to come back though, it was 6 months if not more. I knew I wasn’t pregnant, but I kept the fact from everyone because I didn’t want anyone to think I was. When they came back my periods were horrifically painful and so heavy. It was almost unbearable. I did choose to deal with them though, rather than dealing with going back on the pill after my previous experiences.

I only went back on the pill when I got a new boyfriend, for obvious reasons. This new pill is actually a godsend. I get regular periods and they are just medium heaviness, standard pain, nothing as horrific as before. Just your usual cramps. Although when I had scarlet fever the antibiotic basically deactivated my pill and that one period was the worst ever. Needless to say I will be staying on this pill for the time being.

I will say to anyone young sweating it about their period. Don’t worry about it. It will all even itself out eventually and they get much easier to deal with. Just make sure you are never caught out. Always be prepared. Have some sort of protection in every handbag. I always used to keep some in the inside pocket of my school coat because the teachers never let us bring our bags to the loo. I still get so anxious when I am on my period but it helps knowing I have my emergency kit in my bag for any accidents (pants, wipes, pads).

If you want to avail of your own subscription box from MyLadyBug you can use the link above and the code LYNNBLOG for 15% off. It’s perfect if the thought of buying pads or tampons makes you want to curl up and die. Hey if there is enough interest in me talking about periods I may do a YouTube video on it. If you have any questions please post them below and I will be more than happy to help.

Also thank you all so much for nominating my for The Blog Awards Ireland. I am delighted to have made the longlist.

See you Wednesday for a post on my first Comic Con experience.

Have a great weekend,

Dukebox Number 2 | Pet Posts

Hi everyone,
Happy Hump Day.

Jynx received her second Dukebox yesterday so I thought I would give you a quick run down of what she got and how it went down.

Gor Reef Octopus

I have seen toys like this online and really wanted one for Jynx, I have to say she has taken to him something terrible. She refuses to let him out of her sight and he has gone straight to the number one toy list. One difference I have noticed is that she plays with this happy fellow a lot more than her other toys, which she tends to just carry about and look after.

These little treats went down a storm with the little miss. With some treats she can be a bit picky and just leave them for hours before deciding to eat them, whereas others she will play with for a while and throw around before eating. These however were eaten with no hesitation and she was eager to perform to get them. Her food does have chicken in it so that could be why she as more drawn to these rather than other treats.

Happy Pet Rope Ball

This one I decided to give to my brother’s dog Bella as she is a young pup and more active than Jynx, so we thought she would enjoy this more. She enjoyed it perhaps too much. Less than 12 hours later it was broken in half. There is not much that survives that dog though so the fact it lasted so long is a credit to the company. I guess you could say she liked it.

Hungry Hector South Woof Coast Path

These are a fishy treat made of sardine and seaweed. Jynx instantly turned her nose up and them and wouldn’t even take a sniff. Bella however ate hers in one. She tends to do that a lot.
Billy + Margot Fish Skin Cubes

Again another fishy treat which neither dog seemed to like. Jynx did give this one a good smell and ultimately decided not to try it. We aren’t really too sure what Bella did with hers. She sniffed it for a while and then my mum just left it on the floor of my brother’s bedroom for her. It could still be there for all I know.
All in all the doggies were fairly happy with this box. New toys and some treats. I am very disappointed that the dogs are so iffy when it comes to fish based treats as I know they contain a lot of good nutrients. We will keep trying though and see if we can make them give them a go.
Don’t forget you can get 20% off your own Dukebox subscription using the code LYNNJO20.
Enjoy the rest of your weeks guys, my next post will be up on Sunday. I am going to be chatting all about PERIODS (eep)

Too Busy For Balance

Jaysis lads, it’s been so hectic lately that I am losing the run of myself.

I really need to reign it in and get that balance back in my life. I used to always get into work early and out early, to the gym five days a week and eat healthy AND still have time for myself. Lately it doesn’t seem to be following suit, it doesn’t help that I am choosing time to myself over anything else at the moment. I need to get back into my routine of going to the gym and eating better, I am just not happy with me body, at the end of the day that’s the reality of it and I need to do something about it. I am so stuck in this idea that if I don’t go to the gym at a certain time, I need to get out of that idea. Although it will be easier when I have my full license and can just drive to the branch of the gym nearest me whenever it suits.

I also need to get my routine check. I am getting up and going to work at different hours every day. I need to work on being up at the same time every day and in work for set hour, this is probably one of the disadvantages of working on a flexi time system, I can go in later if I like, but I think it is important to set yourself a time, so you keep a routine.

I think unhappiness is key to things getting like this. I think I have solved that problem though so here’s hoping.

How do you all keep balance in your life? I am trying to use my planner more I find that always makes me (and the brain) feel more in control.

Have a great week and good luck to anyone hearing about their CAO choices this week, I remember how nerve racking it was. Just remember that if you don’t get the course you want there is always another option and that everything happens for a reason.

Love always

Zip Lining | Day Trip

Hey guys!

It was my beautiful friend Caitríona’s birthday the other week and she decided she wanted to do something different to celebrate the occasion. What did she decide to do? Ziplining. Now those of you who know me may be thinking to yourself right now, surely Lynn Jo didn’t go, she would hate something like that. Well I did go, because I am trying to say yes to more things, remember, and I LOVED it.

I genuinely had a great time. Don’t be fooled, there were times I really didn’t want to do it or was crapping myself, but at the end of it all I had an amazing time and I might consider doing it all again.

We went to Zipit for our excursion. Here they have a number of different courses with a variety of activities and zip lines. We gave the red course a miss but I have to say I gave everything else a shot and even nailed the base jump.

It’s about €30 for the experience but that does give you 4 hours on site. I would highly recommened it to everyone whether you’re an adventurer or not. Besides you’re strapped in so can’t really hurt yourself can you.

See you all Sunday for another post. Not too sure what it will be on so feel free to let me know what you would like to see.
Have a great rest of the week.

My Favourite Dish | Recipe

NOTE: Sorry this was so late going up guys. Blogger was shooting up loads of privacy issue warnings earlier and wouldn’t let me upload. ENJOY 🙂
SECOND NOTE: I just realised the navigation bar at the top of my blog does not work. I will have this fixed by the time Wednesday’s post goes live. oops. :O

Hi guys,
I have decided to share a recipe I adore with you all. It’s a go to of mine when I am not too sure what to make. I also use it as a base recipe and make slight changes to it in order to have different flavours. It’s so easy to do, takes only a few minutes to prepare and you can leave it in the oven and get on with any other jobs you may have to do. I found the original recipe here a number of years ago but I have paraphrased the recipe to suit how I would normally make it.
Note: I have used Sweet Potato with this recipe before and they take about the same time to cook as regular potato and I may even taste slightly nicer in the dish.

Chicken fillets
Green Beans
Red Onion
6 Tablespoons Olive Oil
Herbs and Seasonings

Baking dish
Chopping board
Slotted spoon
1.     Preheat the oven to 180°c to 200°c.
2.     Using some kitchen paper wipe a drop of oil around the baking dish.
3.     In a bowl combine the oil, juice of a lemon (or more depending on how you want it to taste) the garlic and any other herbs and seasonings you might require. If I am adding a different flavour I would do it at this step combining it with the oil and omitting the lemon juice if necessary.
4.     Slice another lemon and line the bottom of the baking dish with the slices.
5.     Prepare your green beans and place them in the bowl with the oil and flavourings. Swirl them about so they are coated in the mixture. Take them out with the slotted spoon in order to allow for any excess of the mixture to drain off. Lay the beans in a single layer on top of the lemon slices.
6.     Repeat step 5 with any other vegetables you want in your dish( excluding the red onion). I normally stick to just potatoes and carrots. I have tried brocolli and cauliflower but they cooked significantly faster than the rest of the vegetables and became quite burnt. Putting them in later was too much hassle for me so I didn’t really use them again. I normally just stick to potatoes and carrots, either peeled or unpeeled and roughly chopped. Use these to line the outside of the dish.
7.     Coat the chicken fillets in the mixture and lay them in the middle of the dish.
8.     Pour any left over mixture over everything.
9.     Chop a red onion into 4 and place in each corner of the dish for flavour. Sometimes if I have a spare lemon I will cut some slices of lemon and onion and sprinkle them over the chicken fillets for added flavour.
10. Cook. I have found that about 40 minutes cooks the chicken fillet to perfect, mouth watering tastiness. This is with a decent sized chicken fillet, but times may vary. Sometimes the vegetables take longer than the chicken so I take the chicken out and leave the vegetables  a bit longer although this can be rectified by chopping the vegetables smaller.

If you make this I would love to see your photos.
I have mainly made two variants of this dish but both were superb. One was with franks hot sauce. I mixed this with the oil and followed the rest of the recipe. It was lovely and tangy. More recently I had a half packet of Ol Del Paso Garlic and Paprika taco seasoning which I chucked into the lemon and oil mixture and this added loads of flavour.
I am off zip lining for the afternoon so expect a post on that on Wednesday. I did forget my camera though so I wont get to vlog it L I do plan on bringing the boyfriend  at some point in the future so he can pretend he is Batman so I will vlog that.
Have a great week!

Summer in Berlin | Guest Post

Hi all, today I am sharing the second in my “How I Am Spending My Summer” Series.
Today’s post is from Jade Rebecca over at She has gone to Berlin to spend the summer with a friend. Have a look to see what she had to say.

On June 2nd I got on a plane and traveled to Berlin, Germany, embarking on a slightly terrifying summer adventure with one of my best friends. She had visited the previous summer and fell in love with the city. She lives in Scotland so we do not get to spend a lot of time together throughout the year and we had made plans to spend the summer together, so heading back to her favourite place was something I was ecstatic about.

I have had tons of changes in my life in the past few months, including some pretty big changes in the next year. I will be graduating university in September 2016 and to say I am terrified is an understatement. I realised that I had not comepletely embraced the ‘college’ experience and decided to do something crazy and fun this summer, travelling to Berlin for the summer was on that list. While it is not my final summer before I am out in the big bad world, I wanted to begin exploring the world.
While a J1 visa to the US was definitely on the cards, I decided I would much prefer to wait until I was 21 to embark on my USA adventure so I will be saving that for next summer.
Although two of the three ‘summer’ months have passed I still feel like there is tons of time to try something new or even travel somewhere new. It doesn’t have to be a flight away, explore your own country some more! While in Berlin I have learned a lot about myself and I feel like I have learned a pretty good amount about the German culture and people. In my final two weeks here I plan to visit several museums that I have been dying to see, German history is one of my favourites to learn about and I am excited to see more.

So far this summer we have mainly just explored the city, visited the Holocaust Memorial, seen the sights such as Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburger Tor etc. While it has been a summer for fun I have also been working a lot so it has not all been fun and games. It does not feel as much like a holiday as it had before in the beginning, it now feels more like I live here, which is strange because I have never felt that for a city other than Dublin. It has been amazing to explore a new country that I have not visited and it has been incredible to just live day by day here going through the paces.

We are now into our final two weeks here and I have loved our time here but I am still excited to head home before I begin university for my third and final year. I miss my family and my dog, there are certain home comforts and Irish food I miss (lucozade, white pudding, red lemonade) but I am so grateful to have had the experience of living in Berlin for the summer, I don’t think I have ever travelled on so many trains until I arrived here. I have definitely fallen in love with the city and hope to visit it again after I leave!

Thanks for that Jade Rebecca and enjoy your last two weeks in Berlin.

Pop back on Sunday when I will be sharing one of my favourite base recipes which I often change and adapt. It is so quick and simple, it may change your life.

M-Eyebrows | Beauty

I know ya’ll think the title of today’s post is genius.

There is nothing better than ending your bank holiday weekend with a cup of hot chocolate whilst writing a blog post. It was a good weekend too. I went to see the new Big Bang Comics store. I am a big fan of those lads and was delighted to see them move to a bigger unit. They needed it. I also went to see Antman AND Jurrasic World. Seriously good movies. Highly recommended.

Anyway, I just wanted to do a quick post on my eyebrows because I have gotten them done for the first time in a year and I feel like a new woman. I always go to Benefit’s Brow Bar in Arnotts in Dublin. I normally get a wax and tint. I go for the tint because there are days I might not wear make up, or when I am at the gym, and it is nice to have a bit of colour on my brows. One of the main reasons I consistently return to Benefit is because my natural brow shape is very similar to their signature brow arch so their process works well for me. Of course finding a brow artist is something that takes time and Benefit may not be the place to suit you so I recommend trying a few places and methods until you find one you are happy with,

I have also been using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow pomade now I have tamed my brows. I have been trying to find a brand that does a pomade I could buy in Ireland and I had no luck. i had heard the ABH pomade was good though, if not a bit pricey. Elysian Brows on South William Street popped up in my searches as stocking the pomade so I went over to them for a chat and to get myself kitted out. I got the pomade in chocolate which is a medium to dark shade and also picked up the Anastasia Beverly Hills number 12 brush which is a dual ended eyebrow brush with an angled brush at one end and a spoolie at the other. Altogether I spent €55 on the two but I must say it is worth it. I have been using the product for almost two weeks and have barely made a dint in it and I use it every day. You need very little product as it gives a lot of coverage and also the brush is the perfect tool for application. An added bonus is that you can wash the brush and get a very long time out of it. Check out my before and after pictures below. You can check Elysian Brows out here.

I realise my brows may not have been entirely ‘on fleek’ today as I was in a rush, you can see them in better form on instagram, but you get an idea of the product anyway. I highly recommended.

On Wednesday I will be working on judging the Health and Wellbeing category for Blog Awards Ireland so instead of a post from me I will be featuring my next “how I am spending my summer” piece from Jade Rebecca over at

Have a great week guys!
